Trends in home improvements
Published:  05 September, 2008

With housing prices falling and petrol prices rising, it is proving a difficult time for many home owners and for retailers in the home improvement sector.  The Tile Association reports from its retail members a trend in homeowners giving their house a face lift rather than embarking on major home improvements.

A completely new kitchen or bathroom is a big investment for which the majority of home owners will seek finance and families are wary of credit in this unpredictable climate.  However; renewing the tiling can revive the look of a dated bathroom or bring a slightly over the hill kitchen up to sale condition.  Investing in tile is investing in the future.  If well fixed tiles can last a lifetime and will still look brand new when the housing market moves on the homeowner is ready to relocate, up value or downsize.

Are you displaying a good selection of tiles?  Have you got the latest ranges?   Your local tile distributer can provide the latest in tile trends and displays.  Check out the TTA website for your nearest tile supplier.

Employing or recommending tile fixers?

If you are employing or recommending tilers make sure they have adequate experience and/or an NVQ/SVQ based qualification.  A NVQ or SVQ Level 2 is the qualification that will produce a competent tiler.  A tiler with a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Card is a fixer who can work to NVQ Level 2 or higher.

To be doubly sure choose a fixer who is a member of a trade association.   The Tile Association won't accept just anyone as a member.  Fixer members have their workmanship assessed and every applicant is checked out for a good trading record and to ensure they are financially sound - so you don't have to.

For further information contact a TTA member tile supplier, phone 020 8663 0946 or look on TTA website at http://www.tiles.org.uk/.
