Let there be designer light

I wonder if Thomas Edison could have envisaged just how different the lighting market would be more than a century after his groundbreaking invention of the commercial incandescent light bulb in 1879.

Once purely a practical necessity, lighting now strikes the balance between functionality and aesthetical appeal, as we see more decorative lights populate the modern home. Technical advancements have facilitated this shift in the lighting industry, with a key development being the revolutionary LED. Formerly restricted to the automotive industry, the LED has developed into a genuine alternative for the halogen lamp; its miniature size allowing the introduction of more creative and visually stunning lighting.

Once greeted with apathy from designers,  lighting now takes precedence as an integral part of the design process as we see mood lighting such as colour changing strips decorate contemporary kitchens and bathrooms. Illuminated shelves, plinth lighting, and illuminated splash backs are all examples of innovative lighting increasingly seen in high end kitchen and bathroom showrooms.

What does the future hold for the lighting industry? Undoubtedly it will revolve around energy efficiency, with government initiatives pushing the use of energy saving lamps in both the domestic and commercial markets. The benefits of energy efficient lighting are tenfold with longer lamp life, reduced running costs and regulation compliance a few encouraging examples of why we should all make the switch to energy saving lighting.
