Ideal Bathrooms Commercial Director Danielle Lillis considers the business opportunities resulting from age changes in the country's demographic profile.
According to statistics over 50% of the adult EU population will be aged over 50 by 2015. Added to this, consumers aged over 50 currently account for 80% of UK wealth and 80% of consumers aged over 50 are homeowners. There are also over 11 million people currently registered disabled within the UK.
These statistics will have a resounding effect on domestic and institutional bathroom facilities. Coupled with government legislation, which is driving the adaptation of homes through grant funding to enable the elderly to remain independent and to reduce the tax burden of care provision, the elderly and infirm is a large market sector which needs consideration.
Within this category would be products such as wall mounted WC's which allow wheelchair access and wall mounted washbasins with chrome support brackets rather than pedestals again to allow wheelchair access.
Whatever the need the market requires a variety of product for domestic and public sector application. There is a big market there waiting for stylish product as well as the purely functional. Today's elderly have the disposable income to afford these comforts and will pay the price to be able to continue living in familiar surroundings amongst the neighbours they know and with their favourite possessions around them.
