The cooking appliances market and the future
Comment by JONATHAN LIM, Product Marketing Manager, Coolzone

Extra consumer choice, the drive for new technology and coordinated design has had a profound effect on the market explains Jonathan Lim, Product Marketing Manager at Coolzone:

The cooking appliance market has undergone significant changes in the last 24 months including the shift in demand to built-in units, a plethora of models with extra features - and the key point is that leading-edge style and design is now available to consumers in the mid to entry-level rather than just for the top brand, high-priced aspirational purchases.

The cooking appliance category, especially built-in units has experienced growth despite the slowdown of the economy. Fuelled by replacement purchases, and to a lesser extent first time buyers, this growth can be explained by homeowners opting to renovate their kitchens in order to add much needed value to their properties in a slowing housing market. In addition new technology - such as LED minute minders, fully programmable timers and colour-changing displays - is now appearing in entry to mid-level products and improved style and design is becoming more affordable to consumers.

The demand is confirmed by GFK, whose figures show that built-in sales still represent well over 52% of the market in both volume and value.

Future trends for the built-in market centre not only around continuing style and design improvements, with mirror finishes and sleek contemporary lines, but also around time saving features. Various colour options, such as black have recently been introduced to the market.

It's exciting times for the market with significant opportunities. Not only are buyers striving for a consistent theme across ovens and hobs from the same brand, this is extending to fridges, wine coolers, dishwashers and laundry products.
