Tiling to heated floors
Published:  01 June, 2007

Specialist undertile heating systems are the very latest must have for bathrooms and kitchens. They give that added feel of luxury and free up valuable wall space in rooms where that space is at a premium. They can be fitted on top of existing floor surfaces so there’s no need to dig up floors and they are very thin so there is noticeable extra height to the floor.

Most of the systems are relatively easy to install so long as you follow the instructions. However, there are many different types of system on the market and many, many different types of floor for them to be laid on. The most important things to consider are:

  • The coefficient of thermal expansion of the flooring in relation to that of the heated sub-floor.
  • Choosing the correct adhesive to ensure that it is capable of withstanding changes due to thermal effects.
  • The grout mortar in the joints between hard flooring units will be subjected to stresses as the temperature of the flooring changes.
  • Movement joints are traditionally installed over Structural Movement Joints as such positions are extremely liable to move over the life of the building. You will find more detailed information in The Tile Association’s technical document called “Tiling to Heated Floors”. It will guide you through the fundamentals and help you avoid the pitfalls.
The Tile Association website at www.tiles.org.uk has a help section where you can search the FAQs or e-mail your own question. This facility is available to members and non-members. Alternatively you can phone 020 8663 0946 or e-mail info@tiles.org.uk
