Carron Phoenix has been recognised as an excellent example of energy efficiency, gaining a highly commended at the recent Scottish Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing Awards, organised by the Carbon Trust Scotland..
The Carbon Trust considers various criteria in making its decision. This includes energy cost savings achieved by the company and the impact of the project on the applicant's competitive position. The project's long term sustainability is also considered such as the company's overall energy policy, the plans and programmes to implement those policies and the monitoring, reporting and control procedures in place to maintain improvements.
Working together with the Carbon Trust, Carron Phoenix undertook a detailed investigation of its compressed air system identifying exactly how the existing system operated, allowing site engineers to specify the most suitable and efficient compressors for their factory.
The company invested £170,000 installing new variable speed drive air compressors reducing energy bills by £103,000 per year, with electricity savings in the region of 1.6 million kWh and reducing carbon emissions by 683 tonnes of CO2 per annum in addition to saving an estimated £9,000, and untold man-hours, on maintenance annually.
