The expansion of tiles

The developments in tile design and manufacturing technology have been outstanding over the past decade, largely driven by the leading manufacturers in Europe. Concurrently, the UK tile sector has rapidly grown as ceramic tiles have evolved from a utilitarian floor and wall covering, for the kitchen and bathroom, to a fashionable, decorating statement with applications throughout the home. The level of innovation is set to continue with both texture and size being dynamic aspects to watch.

It is only a few years ago that we spoke of 400 x 400mm floor tiles as being ‘large format'. The new ranges currently being launched have more than quadrupled in size and now feature 1.2m by 600mm and 1.2m x 1.2m sizes for floors and 900 x 300mm for walls. In addition, the rectified edge is becoming more widespread reflecting a gradual shift in consumer taste towards a more tailored, seamless look.

In terms of design the stone phenomenon continues with no sign of abating. Advances in manufacturing technology mean that not only do quality, stone-look tiles visually resemble stone, they increasingly feel like stone too, featuring textured surfaces with natural appeal. Expect to see subtle patterns on stone backgrounds being introduced, reflecting the rising popularity of large patterned wallpaper in the home.

At the recent Cevisama exhibition drama and glitz were prevalent, driven by the taste and global buying power of wealthy Russians. To what extent this style will trickle down into mid market, UK suburbia will be interesting to see; keep an eye on the many home decorating publications and TV programmes which play such an influential role in formulating consumers' home decorating ideas and expectations in the UK.
