Current housing shortage, impact existing homes has on carbon emissions, rogue traders problem all have one common theme; all are exacerbated by the 17.5% rate of VAT charged on home improvements.
If government reduced VAT they would see improvements in the existing housing stock, social and economic harmony, better health and raise 5 million homes classified as non decent out of the poverty bracket.
Government will also be on track achieving their goal of a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050.
Industry will benefit; increased sales, the demise in rogue traders a fall in customer complaints and Treasury will see revenue from the black economy.
So what can we do?
The BMA has joined forces with 12 like minded bodies led by the Federation of Master Builders to lobby government and undertake a cohesive PR campaign. An Early Day Motion has received support from 94 MP's and growing. Further support has been pledged by TV personalities such as Lawrence LLewlyn Bowen and Naomi Cleaver. The media are giving their support and a constant round of meetings with Treasury by coalition supporters underpins the message.
Individuals can join the campaign by signing and returning BMA postcard or visit www.cutthevat.co.uk and register support on line.
During June the BMA will deliver the postcards to Downing Street, together with consumer magazine House Beautiful, FMB and 3 MP's.
So what's stopping you, sign and return that postcard today!!!
