The Changing Face of French Design
Comment by MIKE WHITE, Pyram

Number 28 in the 1945 US army publication "112 Gripes about the  French" is "The French won't accept new ideas. They're not inventive." Well I was not alive in 1945 and that may have been for the "oversexed and over there" but the down the ages the French have provided the world with some of it's most iconic images. Think Le Corbusier, La Defense or even the Citroen DS. Certain countries give us cars and suits to die for whilst others make everything run on time but it's the French who consistently redefine adjectives such as "Quirky" "Unconventional" and "Idiosyncratic".

The French design with their hearts on their sleeves and more often than not it rubs off on their products. Despite the classic enmity we cannot get enough of it. We flock there on holiday, buy their property, wax effusively about their food and fall over after their fine wine. Our small industry itself has seen more than a fair share of French flair. Many of us are old enough to remember the relentless march of a certain shade of brown oak kitchen. Times have marched for the French too and now that the they love us again, well, Sarkozy at least, maybe it's time for us to have a fresh look at the way our Gallic neighbours view the world. When we all become bored with minimalist we might just look their way.

And yes, I know Le Corbusier was Swiss but he became a French citizen in 1930!
