Making the most of waste
Published:  01 May, 2007

Following the power spending of the 1980s and the blingfest of the 1990s, we have entered a much more compassionate Naughties. A decade where people focus much less on consumerism and much more on caring. Carbon neutrality, solar heating and ethical purchasing are now part of our everyday vocabulary. And whether we personally implement them or not, we cannot fail to be aware of them.

Responsible waste disposal and recycling also fall into this category with TV advertising and local councils encouraging us to develop an eco-friendly attitude to the mountains of waste that each of our households generate annually.

As a result, two products entering much more into the kitchen mainstream are waste disposers and waste sorter bins – both of which we have added to our product portfolio recently.

On reflection, maybe we should have added them sooner. As a dedicated sink manufacturer it seems now like an obvious thing to offer waste disposers too. For years they have been staple product of the American kitchen but they have been slow to catch on here. Until now.

In commercial terms, for retailers they are a win-win product. If you are selling a sink and tap combination anyway, it’s got to be the easiest thing to add a waste disposer to the sale too. As an added value product, it’s a cinch to bump up the profit a bit. Or why not chuck in a free waste disposer as an incentive to close the deal.

The funny thing about waste disposers, and for that matter waste sorter bins, is that they have made disposing of your waste kind of glamorous in an eco-friendly kind of way. A definite feel-good purchase.

As an industry we can all do our bit for the environment by encouraging wider understanding and use of the waste disposers. They are easy to install and operate, clean and efficient to run and most importantly can make a huge reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill and generating nasty greenhouse gases.

And at the same time they make good business sense. After all, no-one said anything about the Naughties being non-profit making as well.
