One of the principle trends is an increasing demand for space-saving furniture. While changes to Part M of the building regulations are pushing up the number of bathrooms per property (a cloakroom is now a legal requirement on all new-build properties, thus increasing the bathroom tally for an average home to three - cloak, family bathroom and en-suite) the actual size of each room is being reduced to compensate.
In fact, the average family bathroom is now a paltry 2m x 2m - ensuring it truly lives up to its ‘smallest room in the house' moniker. Thus, space-saving solutions are being sought to ensure there tiny rooms are used to their fullest potential and fitted furniture is an ideal solution.
As ever, design wise UK trends are being led by the continent when it comes to bathroom furniture, which is no bad thing because there are some really sleek and stylish designs coming through that are perfect for the UK consumer. Key for us in 2008 is the use of coloured glass as accent panels. When we visited ISH and industry events on the continent last year, both colour and glass were BIG news - it was literally everywhere. It usually takes the UK well over a year to embrace new trends from overseas so we're really excited to be introducing coloured glass accent panels into our furniture ranges as early as March 2008.
Obviously you can have an entire bathroom with colour glass doors, but we think they look amazing when combined with rich timber finishes and this is possibly more likely to work for the UK's cautious home-owner. Using them in this way - as accent doors - allows the bathroom designer to introduce bold colour and exotic materials without going over the top. If you don't have any coloured glass in your showroom now, get it in - it's going to be huge in 2008.
