Transformation of the humble kitchen tap
Comment by DARREN HOLLIDAY, Managing Director, ABODE

In recent years, the humble kitchen tap has received a massive transformation in its place within the home. No longer the simple piece of utilitarian and functional design, the kitchen tap is now funktional with a capital F (and a K!).

The tap normally takes its place in the corner of the kitchen, and that has often been a last thought, but now, it's high on the agenda in the design stakes and has a pride of place!

Who would have thought ten years ago that you would now be able to choose from such a wide variety of new options. Spray and shower attachments, springs and flexi head extensions, instant filtered or boiling water, light emitting diodes indicating water temperature, and most recently, water saving and flow regulation measures built in! Plus, the most vital element of this trend is that these extra levels of functionality have been built into products without destroying the styling, be they classic, contemporary, square or round.

As for the future, expect to see new technology take a greater place within the tap at all price points, for example, in valve technology we will start to see slim-line CD valves allowing the shape of the age-old Monobloc tap to be revolutionised. Sliding low pressure CD valves adding ease of use, new styling opportunities plus new regulatory anti-scold, auto return cold features on the tap cartridge, as additional safety measures.

Add to this, new water saving features such as ceramic cartridges with changeable flow positions and flow restricting aerators allowing consumers to halve their water use through a rotation of the aerator.

At the KBB exhibition this year expect to see a broad array of new products, including magnificent architectural designs and the return of ‘art deco' styling that will bring the kitchen tap to the fore and re-enforce its position as the new style leader in the kitchen.
