If you happen to be reading this at KBB 2008, pop along to Hall 20, Stand B22 and help the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) lobby Government for a reduction in VAT for repair, maintenance, improvements and materials.
The BMA has joined forces with the Federation of Master Builders, the National Home Improvement Council and other organisations to form a coalition. The coalition believes reducing VAT from 17.5 per cent to five per cent for all maintenance and home improvement work would help the Government achieve its target of cutting carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2050.
It would also benefit millions of UK homeowners by getting rid of cowboy builders, helping those who cannot afford vital repairs to their homes, bringing our empty properties back into use and protecting the countryside.
Speaking about the campaign, Yvonne Orgill Chief Executive of the BMA says: "The entire KBB Industry should support this campaign. We must encourage householders to ensure their homes are fit for purpose and as energy and water efficient as possible. We need to make it easy for them to do so and offer incentives. Reducing VAT is certainly the best incentive possible as other countries that employ this practice have proven and it's one way for Government to reach its aim of cutting carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2050. A win-win solution."
You can support the Cut the VAT campaign by filling in a postcard at the BMA stand. All coalition postcards will be hand delivered to Downing Street in the autumn.
